Fuel Savings in Flight

Since 1985 my company(Latlong inc) has sought to design procedures to improve flight safety and shorten time in flight thus saving fuel for the users.  On June 10,1990 we were retained by one of the largest air carriers in the USA to design a tailored arrival to Eagle County Regional airport in Colorado (KEGE).  The FAA laser tracked the approaches that were flown in Atlantic City New Jersey on August 10,1990.  All the approaches were within a 50ft  accuracy both laterally and vertically.  Latlong inc can tailor FMS CDU Line Selectable Approaches to runways at airports worldwide for insertion into the databases of FMS/EFIS equipped aircraft.  These procedures not only save fuel but lessen the pilot workload through use of all AFDS systems until intercepting a nominal vertical path to the landing runway.  These procedures are designed to overlie current TERPS & PANS-OPS approved published approaches…thus needing no further approval.  Pilots BRIEF & FLY the approaches as per their normal company SOPs…no changes…until they reach minimums and make the decision to Land or Go-Around.  Unless executing CATII or CATIII approaches, pilots normally DISCONNECT all autoflight systems after making the decision to land, then continue to touchdown manually.  In some cases the manual flight portion involves a “Circling to Land” maneuver of some type…in many cases this Circling procedure includes searching for highways, rivers, bridges & buildings.  These particular approaches start off as “Charted Visual Approaches” with little to no guidance on the user’s approach plate.  Pilots must focus most of their attention looking for landmarks that will lead them to the correct runway alignment visual cues in order to continue the approach to landing…often resulting in AIRSPEED & ALTITUDE excursions.  There have been no changes in the past fifty years..I know..I was there.  In 1985, shortly after the introduction of new technology aircraft – FMC/EFIS equipped – my company began designing tailored approaches that could be used :

  1. As an EXTENSION to Non-Precision Approaches after reaching minimuns and deciding to Land
  2. Flying Charted Visual Approaches
  3. Flying Visual Approaches
  4. As an EXTENSION to Non Precision Approaches – Circling to Land

The procedures are LINE SELECTABLE from the database and are meant to be flown using all AFDS (Autoflight Systems) until intercepting a nominal vertical path to touchdown.

Why use Latlong inc’s procedures?

  1. SAFER
  2. FUEL SAVINGS – LESS TIME IN FLIGHT
  3. NOISE ABATEMENT – CLEANER ENVIRONMENT
  4. ELIMINATING CFIT/GPWS INCIDENTS

Check out my slide show.  If you don’t see an Airport/Runway/Approach combination, then contact us at peter.cutsey@latlonginc.com and we’ll design it for you.  Provide us with the Airport Runway, Terminal area entry point from which you would normally expect to accept a clearance for a visual and we will design your SAFE, FUEL SAVING approach.
